Venice/Murano

May 31, 2012

On our second day in Venice, we decided to go to Murano to see the famous glass blowing. Mom and Dad sell Murano glass products so they were excited to see it first hand as well! We took the water taxi past the main sights and got to the factory. The area was very serene and quiet. Seeing the men make their products was very cool too. It is mostly a family trade and one becomes a professional only through apprenticeship. We then perused the (very expensive) gift shop and headed back to the mainland.

We went to see the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge. The Bridge of Sighs is so called because it was the last chance prisoners had to see the outside world before they were locked away... kinda creepy! The Rialto Bridge was bustling and we spent a while at the fruit market eating fresh and delicious fruit. It was cool because they had fountains to wash stuff so you could chow down right then and there. Afterwards we just sat by the canal.  We also saw our third wedding photo shoot from the past two days. Very romantic...

We then headed off to the train station to take our overnight train to Paris. It was interesting and looked just like the trains in Bollywood movies. Mom wouldn't let us go to the bathroom by ourselves and we had to go in pairs. Radhika, Mom and Dad had all been reading the online forums before coming so they were a little spooked. In the middle of the night some French man also came insisting he was in our private four person couchette. He didn't speak English and we didn't speak French... there was a lot of yelling - kinda scary. Finally somebody explained to him that he was in the wrong place. He must have been really confused because he knocked on our door again later in the night.
