We got into Venice fairly late. We were going to take the water taxi to the hotel but a very friendly police officer advised us to save our money and to walk instead. Along the way we found a nice place to get some pizza and falafel. The cook was from Bombay and even spoke Hindi - who would've thought?
While we were eating it started to lightning and thunder. Then it started pouring. We still had all our luggage. The officer had said 10 minutes walk, but failed to mention all the bridges. We kept walking and they kept saying "10 minutes." It was pouring, pouring. Radhika and Dad had on the bright ponchos and I saw people watching and chuckling from the safety of their buildings as we trudged on. It was kinda funny... in a really twisted way. After what seemed like an eternity, we finally reached the hotel to an elderly boisterous man who spoke little English. We were drenched as was our luggage so we dealt with that. The room was marvelous though, decorated in the traditional Venetian style. Exhausted, we conked out.
We got up and headed via water taxi to St. Mark's Square - a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square was beautiful as was the Basilica. Although many have come to associate the word Basilica with "church" it actually just means large building. Wooo etymology.
